Summary:

Becoming feels like sitting down and watching everything unfold in front of one's eyes, watching Michelle get through being a lawyer, businesswoman, educator, wife, mother and the first lady all in a detailed timeline. It also portrays her as a woman thrown into the political spotlight by her husband's career yet she's portrayed herself and her story separate from Barack’s also clearly showing her voice and power boldly.

From the beginning, Obama paints her life with her family on the south side of Chicago beautifully. She has expressed her mentality clearly in the aspects of the book from being at Princeton with majority white faces to her working as a lawyer. She has also provided information on her losses and how they have shaped her. She has mentioned the loss of her father and also her roommate due to cancer. Her grieving statements are powerful like “It hurts to live after a loved one has passed away". Above her grief statements is her perspective on life which is clearly explained by the statement “Life is short and not to be wasted."

Michelle has brought Barack into her story and made sure he stays as a side character as it is her story. She has provided instances with Barack, praises for him along with giving good advice which we would have never got to know otherwise.

Obama has clear visions of what she wants to do and has the priorities straight. Also, there are a lot of sacrifices made by her which have shaped Barack’s future and she has always played a vital role in his life. She has even made the decisions come to her as to letting Barack run for president and many more.

This memoir of Michelle Obama is powerful and triumphant and has included never to have disclosed moments in her life and the Obama family. It is not any surprise that the book has sold about 10 million copies and was so successful because it is a wonderful book of memoir.
